The Tear Garden is a captivating collaborative project that blurs the lines between psychedelic rock, gothic electronics, and industrial music. It was formed in 1985 by two titans of the underground music scene: Edward Ka-Spel, the enigmatic vocalist and leader of the British psychedelic band The Legendary Pink Dots, and cEvin Key, the co-founder and driving force behind the Canadian industrial group Skinny Puppy.
The project began after a chance meeting when Key was working as a sound engineer for Ka-Spel on tour. Their unique partnership quickly blossomed into a prolific creative outlet. The Tear Garden’s sound is a rich tapestry of textures, blending Key’s intricate electronic programming and rhythmic soundscapes with Ka-Spel’s poetic, often surreal lyrics and distinctive vocal delivery. The result is a sound that is both haunting and beautiful, a “sonic alchemy” that is more than the sum of its parts.
Over the years, The Tear Garden has expanded to include a rotating cast of members from both The Legendary Pink Dots and Skinny Puppy, including the late Dwayne Goettel, which further enriched their musical palette. Their discography, released primarily through Nettwerk and Key’s own Subconscious Communications label, includes critically acclaimed albums like Tired Eyes Slowly Burning (1987) and The Last Man to Fly (1992). In 2025, The Tear Garden announced their new album, Astral Elevator, on Artoffact Records, the band’s first new studio output in many years.
